What is Shockwave Therapy for Erectile Dysfunction and Joint Pain Relief?

Extracorporeal shockwave therapy, known as ESWT, involves application of mechanically generated external sound waves (high energy acoustic waves). The term extracorporeal simply means “outside the body”. This is not to be confused with ultrasound used for imaging or focused ultrasound to create heat.

Initially, the technology was used for lithotripsy (highly focused sound), then PT after injury, trauma or surgery (radial sound waves). Focused sound waves tend to be “destructive”, such as when trying to eliminate a kidney stone.

Radial waves generate a higher energy at impact and diffuse deeply into tissue. That’s what is used in the outpatient clinic such as at R3 Anti Aging. It’s very tolerable, not destructive and super helpful for conditions like erectile dysfunction, Peyronie’s disease, joint arthritis and soft tissue pain such as from golfer’s or tennis elbow or frozen shoulder.

The technology can be used to clear edema and damaged tissue, gently pushing towards lymphatic drainage. It increases blood flow and with repeated use leads to collagenesis and angiogenesis.

Radial shock waves are a really great option for MSK applications. It’s more comfortable for patients and less destructive than focused. Sound waves put energy into tissue faster than the muscles can react. Cavitation results as the sound waves travel through the tissue with energy. Over repeated pulses, it causes microtrauma and it sets off a healing cascade with nitric oxide, lymphatic activity, vasodilation and metabolic activity. Angiogenesis results with nutrient rich blood flow!

Most radial shockwave devices, such as the Intelliwave, send the energy through pneumatic propulsion. R3 Anti Aging uses a radial shockwave device known as Intelliwave, which has several different tip sizes depending on the area of application and a full range of frequency to choose from.

More than 18 million men in the USA over age 20 are affected by ED, according to a study by Johns Hopkins. Five percent of men that are 40 years old have complete ED and that number goes up to about 15% of men at age 70.

Mild and moderate ED affects about 10% of men per decade of life (i.e. 50% of men in their 50’s, 60% in 60’s and 70% in 70’s. There can be significant psychological affects including:

  • Stress
  • Depression
  • Guilt
  • Low image of self
  • Relationship issues
  • Performance anxiety

The shockwave therapy for erectile dysfunction assists with sensation, girth and stiffness with the increased blood flow from the shockwave and the Power Plasma procedure.

Shockwave is:

  • Noninvasive with no downtime
  • Virtually painless application
  • Improvement in the erection
  • More spontaneous sex life
  • No painful prostaglandin injections
  • Almost no risks
  • Treatment in under 25 minutes.

The male penis is not a muscle. Perfusion of the corpus cavernosum is extremely important to proper erectile function. An average of 5 to 8 treatments are needed to achieve a lasting improvement in the erections. Shockwave therapy should be done 2-3 times per week.

The shockwave is fantastic for post-surgical pain relief, soft tissue injury (e.g. Tennis elbow), ED and Peyronie’s Disease. It can also work very well after Coolsculpt where patients have the “sharkbite divots”. It works well for capsular contracture, some types of scars as well.

R3 Anti Aging offers shockwave therapy that is extremely effective and affordable for ED, Peyronie’s, capsular contractures such as adhesive capsulitis along with part of the stem cell injection program for joint and soft tissue pain relief.
